Speaker Spotlight: Dave Kelly

With the 2015 Family Conference just around the corner, we wanted to spend some time helping you get to know our speakers for this year’s conference by asking them to answer a few questions for us. Here’s the second of a series of posts we will be running over the next two weeks leading up to the conference on April 18.

Breakout Session – Spiritual Disciplines in the Family

Dave is currently serving as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Wellston, OH. Fresh out of seminary, he was a youth pastor in Webster, New York, before moving to a pastoral role for 25 years in Maine and five years in Maryland, before coming to Wellston, OH in 2012. These have been non-denominational Bible or Baptist churches. Dave graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1979 with a Master of Theology (ThM) in New Testament Studies. Annual conferences have offered  invaluable encouragement and challenges: at Moody Bible Institute, Word of Life Bible Institute, New Brunswick Bible Institute (Canada); biblical counseling classes, Shepherds’ Conference, continuing education classes through DTS, and Rural Home Mission’s Small Town Pastors’ Conference. He has also volunteered with Pine Tree Hospice and taught college composition at the local community college extension.

What do you feel is the most pressing issue for the Christian family today?

Perhaps the most pressing issue for the Christian family today is to biblically define marriage and family. The follow up to that is to consider what that (a biblically defined marriage and family) looks like: how it works in light of Scripture, grace, and eternity.

Why do you feel this kind of conference is important for our region?

Our region faces the challenges of fractured marriages and families. This conference assists the local church by offering a variety of resources, ideas, and support.

Which conference session (other than your own) are you most excited about?

Each plenary and breakout session looks compelling; yet, I am especially interested in seeing how we prepare the family for cultural engagement.
