Speaker Spotlight: Kathy Ross

With the 2015 Family Conference just around the corner, we wanted to spend some time helping you get to know our speakers for this year’s conference by asking them to answer a few questions for us. Here’s the sixth of a series of posts we will be running over the next two weeks leading up to the conference on April 18.

Panel Discussion

Kathy Ross has a bachelor’s degree in Communication Management from the University of Dayton and a Master’s degree in Child Development and Family Studies from Washington State University. She is currently working on a Master of Education degree from Shawnee State University, focusing on Special Education. She has worked in childcare, preschool, and children’s ministry, and for the past 20 years she has been tutoring and teaching at Pike Christian Academy in Waverly. She has led a women’s Bible study by Martha Peace called The Excellent Wife, and last spring she taught a course in positive communication skills for parents at Mt. Hope Bible Camp. Kathy and her husband Rod have been married for 28 years and have one child. They attend Bethesda Christian Church in Chillicothe, where she serves as a nursery worker.

What do you feel is the most pressing issue for the Christian family today?

There are so many issues facing Christian families that it is difficult to identify the most pressing issue for the Christian family today. I think one of the top issues for American Christians is the struggle between our desire to fit in and our call to stand out.

Why do you feel this kind of conference is important for our region?

Conferences like this one can help parents communicate to their children the importance of being “a peculiar people.” Non-Christians (and many Christian families) often don’t participate because these types of events are “strange.” Who goes to a family conference?! We are called by God to be a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people. We are called to stand out, not to conform. Conferences like this help equip Christian families to answer God’s call to be salt and light.

Which conference session (other than your own) are you most excited about?

I’m looking forward to attending the Biblical Counseling and Discipleship session. We are here to help and encourage each other, and one of the best ways to help someone who is struggling is to give godly counsel. This ability is not something you are born with; it can be taught and learned. I am excited to have the opportunity to learn and expand my knowledge and skill in this area so I can be a more effective representative of Jesus.
